information about standing seam metal roofing systems on Oahu

Pictured above are standing seam metal roofs we have completed.

information on standing seam metal roofing systems

The name is pretty self explanatory, right? "Standing Seam" The seams where the two ends of each metal panel meets are raised or "standing" above the flat portion of the roof as the name implies.

On a standing seam roof, the seams run vertical from the top of the roof to the bottom edge of the roof. The vertical design is to ensure that water will not run horizontally across the roof decking. Water that runs horizontally across a roof is called "troughing".

The panels can be fairly large and installation can be challenging if not experienced with this particular type of roofing system. Only a hand full of roofing contractors will have enough confidence to do the work. A metal standing seam roof is a specialty type of roofing because only a select few roofing contractors have the knowledge to properly install this type of roofing.

The strong point of this type of roofing is there are less seams on the total roofing area. Less seams equals better watertight results. Another strong point with this type of roofing is the low maintenance it has after the installation is done.

We have done a variety of custom homes using a standing seam roofing system in Kahala, Diamond Head, and Round Top located all in the Honolulu areas. We installed several homes at the locations mention above. The top picture on the left is a home at round top and the top picture on the right is a home in Kahala.

pros to standing seam roofs

  • Conventional asphalt shingles are about 750 pounds per 100 square feet while standing seam roof is about 50 to 150 pounds per 100 square feet.

  • Very durable and lasts a long time

  • Comes in a variety of colors

  • Considered a "cool Roof" when choosing a lighter color scheme

cons to standing seam roofs

  • The cost of material is initially high, but the durability of this system will pay off in the end.

  • If you live near a golf course, the golfball can dent the roof and anything heavy that falls on the roof could damage it.
Standing seam roofs are manufactured with steel, aluminum and copper. Giving you some choices in the type of metal you prefer, keep in mind the cost of the roofing system will relate to the metals you decide to use.
